These trucks are so designed that one axle of the4-wheel truck is equipped with larger wheels than theother. This axle carries nearly one-half of the weightof the car and has a single reduction motor geared to it.The other axle has no motor geared to it, and carriesonly weight enough to keep the wheels securely on thetrack. Modem motors.—The motors in general use at thepresent time for street railway work are of the i-pole,series-wound, ironclad type. One of the best known,which may be taken as a typical example, has a weightof 1,455 pounds for a rated capacity of 25 horsepower,with a weight of 715 pounds upon the axles to which itis attached. The advances shown in the constructionof this machine may be inferred from the fact that acorresponding motor of the same capacity formerlyweighed 2,395 pounds, while one of 15 horsepowerweighed 1,735 pounds.
