After this summary handling of matters in San Franciscothe whole land was again at peace. The great wheels ofcommerce began their accustomed rounds; the business mandrew a sigh of relief and returned to his duties ; the laborerput his hands again to his work, wondering where he hadbeen benefited, and cursing his own recklessness ; and farand near our fifty millions of people, who had for nearlyhalf a month stood aghast in terror, slowly shook off thehorrible presence that had been upon them, and took up theold ways of life, as if waking from an oppressive dream.
