2. Closed lotus capital dating from the Ancient Egyptian Kingdom, found byde Morgan in the tomb of the Ptah-schep-ses near Aboukir. Horizontalsection of the column is also given. (Revue arch. 1894.) The column consistsof 6 principal and 6 intermediate stalks, held together by 5 neck-bands. The ca-pital consists of very sharp-pointed buds. The intermediate stalks end above in openlotus-flowers. The whole colutnn is painted over in a naturalistic manner. â 3. Closed lotus capital from the Ptolemaic epoch, taken from the temple ofIsis-us-ret in Philae (Borchardt). Columns with closed lotus capitals did not existin the Modern Kingdom. This kind of capital, like all capitals from the time ofthe Ptolemies, was peculiar in the fact that the stalks were allowed to appear belowthe bands of the necking. In this example, furthermore, the triple intermediate stalksdo not rest between the main stalks. The shaft is smooth and completely coveredwith hieroglyphics. Plate 4. EGYPTIAN ORNAMENT. 15
