SUMMER EXCURSION ROUTES. ALTOONA AND THE ALLEGHENIES. In 1850 the present site of the city of Altoonawas selected as the location of the principalmachine shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad.Around that shop as a nucleus a city hasgrown, numbering now about 25,000 souls, andpossessing all the institutions of a thriving com-munity. The city is located on a table-land atthe eastern pass of the main Allegheny range, twelve hundred feet above the level of the sea.At so great an altitude, where the mountainbreezes are in a state of perpetual motion, thetemperature, even in the high tide of summer,is fresh and invigorating, the atmosphere clearand pure. Altoona enjoys the proud distinction of beinga neighbor to some of the Grandest Scenery of the Alleghenies.A short distance to the west is the far-famed Horseshoe Curve, where to the mighty works of nature is addeda wonderful example of engineering skill. Alittle further on, the matchless scenery of Alle-grippus and the panoramic views of mountasummerexcursionr1884penn
