Description
English: Sunset, Portsmouth Harbour
Signed and dated 1916 by artist, lower right, this view looks up the harbour on the Gosport side where a submarine is running in, with another ahead of it. HMS 'Victory' is in stern view at her moorings on the right and a large three-masted schooner-rigged steam yacht is to the left off the buildings of Camper & Nicholson's yard. Other small naval craft, including a rowed whaler in the foreground, are spread across the calm summer evening waters. The foregrpound submarine is shown with a cigar hull and small conning tower, flying the white ensign and displaying her pendant number as B5, though B5 in fact had a deck casing and much larger conning tower. The drawing has a ruled pencil frame. possibly for reproduction guidance.
