Text Appearing Before Image:
extensive use of Purbeckmarble. Taking these points and the sections ofmouldings, etc., into consideration, I am disposed toplace the general building of the chapel as we now seeit (excluding the west doorway), at about the same date^i.e.J 1241 to 1245, early in the archiepiscopate of thatturbulent prelate Boniface of Savoy, uncle to KingHenry III. In 1280 Archbishop John Peckham isrecorded to have made extensive repairs to the chapel, which would suggest that it had been already some timein existence. The double doorway in the west wall (Plate IV) is amost remarkable feature, uninjured by restoration, and inexcellent preservation, as, like the quintuplet over, ithas for many centuries been enclosed by the Post-roomin the Water Tower. It probably dates somewhat earlierthan the chapel, or. in other words, is of the same ageas the crypt. The photograph reproduced here wasspecially taken under my direction a few years ago. Ithas a circular outer arch, richly moulded, the pointed PLATE V.
Text Appearing After Image:
/. M. Jolinsloii, p/iolo.LAMBETH PALACE CHAPEL: Shaft to N. jamb of ^A/^. Doorway. face p. 148. THE CRYPT AND CHAPEL OF LAMBETH PALACE. 149 bowtell being repeated, with ordinary rolls and deeplyundercut hollows. This arch, with the rest of the stone-work, is in firestone, but is coated so thickly with oldyellow-wash that the jointing is almost entirely hidden. As far as one can judge, the voussoirs appear to be insmall stones with very fine joints. There is a label inthe suite of mouldings. The stone tympanum withintliis arch is pierced by the richly moulded trefoil headsto the twin openings below, and further lightened by asunk and moulded quatrefoil, in which was originally animage of the Blessed Virgin and Child. Now it is partlyfilled by Lauds arms on a cartouche, surmounted by amitre. The central shaft dividing the doors—what inFrance would be called a trumeau—and the threeshafts in the jambs, with their capitals and bases, are ofPurbeck marble, artificially darkened by varnis
