d work, and cut the figures, they must be regarded asthe product of a later age. In the second compartment (No. 2) the subject of a soulspassage to Heaven is treated in a style of art very differentfrom that usually employed in the mural paintings of ourchurches. The soul is swathed in a shroud, having the appearance oflinen, and borne up towards Heaven by two Angels. Itscourse is intercepted by a large vulture; and three femalefigures at the side of the picture are gazing upwards in theattitude of prayer. The easy flow of the drapery, and the expressive featuresof these figures, have led those to whom the sketches havebeen submitted, to suppose that some later artist has re-touched the paintings. Two members of our committee familiar with the worksof Roger Mortimer, an itinerant painter of considerablemerit, who flourished in the early part of the last century, andwas uncle of the celebrated John Hamilton Mortimer,1 of 1 This family were descended from the great historical Mortimers.

MURAL PAINTINGS IN SLAUGIIAM CHURCH. 239 Eastbourne in this county, are of opinion that they resemblethis artists productions. At all events it is the duty of an Archaeological Society toguard future antiquaries from error, by recording the localtradition that this artist was in the habit of re-touch-ing the old and decaying frescoes in our Sussex churches;and that in some cases without doubt, like modern churchrestorers, he has obliterated the distinctive traits of theworks he designed to preserve.
