It con-! sisted of a nave of five bays, divided from the aisles byj octagonal columns carrying pointed arches, the arches\ of two orders, chamfered, the bases of the columns rest-I ing upon a sort of bench, tbe capitals moulded; and bythe section of these mouldings we may fairly conjecture( that the arcade was constructed somewhat late in thefourteenth century. This arcade still remains, and isbuilt of warm-coloured Sussex stone. The nave was, asit now is, without a clerestory. The north and southaisles were several feet narrower than they now are.
