On the S.W. side the ancient lacing and cornice of the wall are still intact. In the Jardin Public 336 V. Boute SO. AOSTA. (PI. B, 2) is a bronze statue of Victor Emmanuel II. in hunting-costume (roi ehassenr), by Tortone. In the Place Charles-Albert, where the chief streets intersect,is the Hotel de Ville (PI. 4; 15, 1), containing the collections of theItalian Alpine Club. To the N.E., in the Hue du Theatre-Rnmain,are the remains nf the Eomau Theatre (PI. 9; B, 1) and the ar-ches of the Amphitheatre. The Rue Humbert-Premier, running to the E. from the PlaceCharles-Albert, jiasses through the ancient Porta Prutoria to the(/4 M.) *TriMmphal Arch of Auymtus (PI. C, 1), with its tenCorinthian pilasters, then crosses the Buthier, which changed itschannel in the middle ages, to the massive arch of a RomanBridge, half sunk in the ground.

In the Rue St. Our.s is thr church of SSt. Uurs (Pl.C, 1), thecrypt of which is borne by Roman eidumns; in the choir are thetomb of Bishop Gallus (d. 546) and tinely-carved stalls (15lh cent.).The cloisters have early-Romantsque columns (12th cent.). Adjoin-ing the church is a 12th cent, campanile. In front of the chapelopposite are two antiijue columns. -- The Priory of St. Ours, closeby, is a picturesque building of the 15th cent., with terracottadecoration and an octagonal tower. Good wood-carvings and fres-coes in the interior. The Catiikkual (PI. B, 1; 14th cent.), with a gaudily-paintedrelief above its main portal, was badly restored in 1837. In thechoir are two mosaics of the 10th cent.. enrly-Renaissance carvedstalls, and the tomb of Count Thomas of Flanders (d. 1259;. Thetreasory contains two reliquaries of the 13th and 15th cent., a AOSTA. Map8,pp.33I,a63.~V.
