The object of the expedition, which was acombined movement from different points by GeneralKilpatrick and Colonel Dahlgren, was defeated in con-sequence of the treachery of a negro guide, employedby the latter officer, and one of the effects of this manstreason was the death of that gallant young soldier.The only result that followed to the prisoners was thatthe rebels became more exasperated than ever, andunfortunately for their reputation, they seem, withregard to the treatment of the few prisoners that fellinto their hands on this occasion, to have behavedrather like savage than civilized people. Not satisfiedwith the perpetration of acts of cruelty upon theseparticular prisoners, they (according to Captain Gla-ziers information) undermined the prison building,and stored beneath the foundation a sufficient quantityof powder to blow it into fragments.
