English: British Pattern 1897 sword and scabbard used by Captain James Doran McComish, WW1, Auckland Infantry Regiment, and post-war (NZ Territorials) sword- George V Officers sword (pattern 1897.) blade type- straight, single fuller to each side, royal cypher and foliage pattern etched to fullers, six pointed star to one side of shoulder, brass (rivet) to centre of star with illegible mark guard- half basket, chrome, pierced foliage, royal cypher- George V with Tudor crown, knot slit near pommel hilt mounts- chromed metal, chequered grip, hemispherical pommel, spherical tang button knot- brown leather strap with plaited acorn attached to hilt grip- fish skin bound with brass wire scabbard- brown leather over wood, leather belt loop to back, silver metal to opening markings- marked at top of blade- "ENGLISH"; NZ issue marks impressed under hilt- "N (broad arrow) Z - 179."
