Description

GAME BALL (PELOTA): here, the pitch of the ball. This in Chichen-Itza is the largest one. This game is related to the cult of the Sun, which has to reborn every day abandoning the darkness: the playing field is the Earth, while the bouncing ball symbolizes the sun. The sacrifice of the player is the death of the sun, a prelude to a rebirth. The ball was gummy resin (4 kg) and had to bounce between the players, who could not use their hands, but only the buttocks, hips, knees and right elbow. The targets were stone discs or rings fixed at the top on the side walls. Faced two teams (light and shadow) consist of seven players each, whose images appear on the reliefs that decorate the base of the walls. On the northern and southern limits of the field they were built two temples dedicated to the Sun and the Moon, also entirely covered with bas-reliefs. (BASKETBALL COMES FROM THIS GAME!)

It was a sacred ritual, as it was an honor to be chosen by lot as a player and the captain of the WINNER team, since being sacrificed began on the path to becoming a god, was slain by the extraction of the heart and beheaded. With his death, the Sun was ready to rise again. [#cancun ,#travel ,#maya ,#tour ,#uxmal ,#guide ,#merida ,#chichen-itza ,#messico ,#isla mujeres ,#Mexico ,#Yucatan]
