Slowly the barge moved away, untilthe lord could see it no more. Thenhe went into the forest, weeping sadly,for he loved his master the king. 4^ King Alfreds Dream Once upon a time the good king,Alfred the Great, was in sad trouble.His strong foes, the Danes, had comeover the sea in ships to England.They had killed many English peopleand burned their houses. Alfred and his men fought bravely,but they were beaten. The Danesdrove them this way and that way.At last the king hid himself, with afew of his friends, in a poor little hutin a lonelj^ place. The weather wasvery cold, and they had little to eat. One day the kings friends went outto look for food, while King Alfredstayed at home. He was very sad andlonelj^, so he took his Bible and beganto read. By and by a poor man came to thedoor. He was cold and hungry. 44

KING ALFREDS DREAM Will you give me a moisel of foodfor Christs sake? asked he. There was one loaf in the hunt anda little wine in a jug. That was all.But the king gave these to the beggar,and the poor man was very thankful. When he had gone away, the kingtook his book again, and went on read-ing. After a time he fell asleep anddreamed a strange dream. He dreamed that an angel stoodbeside him in the hut, and the angelsface war the face of the poor beggar.The argel told the king that it wasindeed he who had asked for food. He said also that God had seen thesad trouble of the king and his people,and would soon help them to driveaway their foes. When King Alfred awoke, he did notforgf.^t his dream. He felt sure it wasa message from heaven. By and by his friends came back 47 with a great many fish which they hadcaught. The king told them of thecoming of the poor man, and of hisown dream.
