Description |
English: Tankard, lidded, plain slightly tapered drum, domed lid with fretted dentications at lid edge, plumed-type thumbpiece, hollow handle, spade terminal additional comments- description- “Dome lid” makers comment- “Cannot be identified without a photograph of the mark” other comments- “See P52. The thumbpiece is a provincial style, most probably from the North West of England (eg Wigan). The plain body and - unusually for a dome lid - denticulations on the lid would suggest a pre-1700 date to most people who have studied tankards. One expert disagrees and thinks this is nearer 1740. I don't think we have enough evidence to be sure. The unusual decoration below the hinge may be distinctive - one expert is checking his records to find out where he has seen it before.” Peter Hayward, Database Manager, Pewter Society, England, 28 February 2008 |
