Description
English: Tankard, lidded, pewter, slightly tapered drum, one low fillet moulded base,“Dome lid” (double domed lid), ramshorn thumbpiece, hollow handle, spade terminal additional comments- description- “Dome lid” makers comment- “No maker's mark” other comments- “A typical dome lidded tankard - see P52. The consensus in the past has been that a ramshorn thumbpiece and a high dome point to an early date (say 1680-1710), but more recently that dating has been questioned, so this tankard may be closer to mid 18th century. Could have been made anywhere in England. The decoration below the hinge was engraved after casting and so doesn't tie this to a particular mould.” Peter Hayward, Database Manager, Pewter Society, England, 28 February 2008
