nches of the lamina remain also in a bud-like conditionat the end after the formation of each pair of pinnae of the second order, while therachis of the leaf grows without limit and resembles a twining stem. The branching of the lamina of Fern-leaves is not unfrequently forked in themature state, as in Platycerium, Schizaea, &c.; but Hofmeister refers also the pinnateforms to dichotomous branching at the commencement, which becomes sympodialwith further development, a right and left fork being alternately weaker in its growth. FERXS. 351 and forming the lateral pinna?; while the branches, the growth of which is favouredform the rachis of the leaf or of the branch of a leaf. Ihe Fortnatio?i of Adventitious Buds, which do not result from the terminalbranching of the stem, is, in Ferns, connected with the leaves.
