These facts are to be borne in mind in determining the directionof incisions, even although in individual cases other considerations come into play.For of still greater importance as regards the direction of the incision is the course ofthe vessels, and particularly of the large and small nerve branches. In makingincisions in the face, for example, the direction of the branches of the facial nerve isto be taken into account. Fortunately, many of the nerves and vessels ramify in adirection corresponding to that in which the skin displays a greater tension, so thata line of incision adapted to the plane of cleavage also corresponds to the course ofthe important nerves and blood-vessels.
