It is the observingstation from which we look out in all directions to the greatstellar system. The solar system is only a minute detail inthe structure of the universe. He who, would explore theuniverse should begin by knowing his immediate surround-ings. Our visual telescopes could show us sixty or seventymillions of stars, distributed over the whole sky, and our greatreflecting telescopes could photograph possibly two or threetimes as many. With only one exception all of these stars areso far away that they are seen as mere points of light in ourmost powerful telescope, even when the magnification is nearly3.000 diameters. The one exceptional star is our Sun. It aloneof all the stars can be seen to have a diameter. It alone ofall the stars can be studied in any geometric detail by meansnow available. This is because
