gang ofhunkies—uncomprehended and uncom-prehending. Four American oflScerssupervise them—four marooned Amer-ican officers living with their wives inlittle frame cottages that look like thesummer camps on some far-off Amer-ican lake. Everything has conspired—quite un-successfully—to make that cemeteryugly. The wreckage of the war stilllies strewn around it. The ceaselessshifting and shrinking of the cemeteryhave left the acres upon acres of gravesbrown and bare. And even now, afterfour years, a peasant will come gesticu-lating into Romagne every few daysto report that he has come upon an-other American body in the woods—perhaps a soldier hastily put underground by his comrades who left alittle cross of two twigs tied togetherto mark the spot. Then the rainswould press the mound down till itshowed no more and wild pigs rootingfor their food would knock away thecross set up as a signal. But soonthere must be an end to all this, andspring should see the graves green andpeaceful.
