The greatest health problem of Rus-
ia is infant mortality. The death rate
among young enormous.
both in city and country, one baby out
of every four dying in the first year of
life (as compared with one in ten in
New York City). The rates are high-
est in those provinces with the purest
Russian population. It is not the lack
of breast feeding which is at fault but
the almost universal habit of giving the
baby all sorts of other foods as well
