200 THE AMERICAN MUSEUM JOURNAL Range: Maine to Texas. Several varieties of the species are recognized, some of which occur in the Western States, Mexico and Central America. Local Distribution: Abundant in swampy situations near the coast. The Salt-Marsh Frog, sometimes called the Field Frog, in- habits swampy meadows rather than large bodies of water, and is common in many brackish swamps in this vicinity, although it is also found in fresh-water swamps. FIG- 24. THE LEOPARD FROG, OR PICKEREL FROG From specimen in Am. Mus. Nar. Hist. very prominent externally and become distended as the species gives voice to its sharp, rasping call. The Leopard Frog, or Pickerel Frog, Rana palnstris Le Conte (Fig. 24), is of moderate size and rather slender form. Ground color above, pale brown, with four rows of large square Leopard, or ' ^ ■,-,■,-, -u -j Pickerel, Spots, two rows down the back and one on each side. Frog. These spots are very dark brown or black. The hind limbs are banded with the same color, which is also present in irregular spots on the fore limbs. There is a large spot over each eye, and one directly over the snout. The upper lips are dark brown, and above this color there is a band of pale bronze.
