ndered as white as the light onthe profile. Ive seen many a hideous libel on Rembrandtslight by people who did not know the meaning of the relativevalue of tone. Rembrandt used the pencil of light, but therewas a reserve and holding in of the power that such a lightcould give. This is where the photographer fails. The undiffusedstrong top light becomes fatal, the high lights get cloggedup in development and the shadows take on too deep a tone;some of them are not far from clear glass. One of the most subtle effects is the combination of tone indark drapery and flesh. If the lighting is correctly andsympathetically done there should be a very beautiful contrastin light and dark grays. To raise or lower the range of tone in portrait work oneneed only manipulate the area of studio light that is available.I dont mean alteration of the blinds that have been arrangedto let in the light, but rather by the use of diffusing screens,drawn over or away from the light area.
