Such facts areof interest not only to those in search of material for purelypictorial ends, but to the photographer who has occasion tomake studies for technical purposes. Since all good archi-tects take into consideration the value of shadows cast byvarious parts of a structure in enhancing the effect of thefinished building, so it is necessary to select a favorable timeto adequately illustrate in a photograph the architects aims. Another point I would make is that many feel the onlysubjects worthy of serious consideration are those obviouslygrand, or picturesque, in themselves. Now, it is doubtless asatisfaction to have such material at hand, yet it is a fact thatmany of the most successful pictures have been created fromwhat the majority of people would consider very commonplacesubjects, proving that in picture-making treatment rather thanmaterial is the important element. 138
