eles Countyspopulation increased practically at thesame rate, from 504,131 in 1910 to 936,455in 1920, or a gain approximately of 85.8per cent, which shows very clearly that thegrowth and development of the countrydistrict immediately surrounding the cityof Los Angeles has kept pace with thegrowth of the city itself. Los Angeles is a city of homes of unsur-passing beauty of every type, from thesmallest cottages to the largest mansions. Her lawns are green the year round; andthe trees, flowers, shrubbery, and palmsare to be seen everywhere. The rarebeauty of the grounds surrounding theattractive homes of this city is the constanttheme of admiration on the part of easternvisitors. Los Angeles is a city of schools, which are among the best built and thebest equipped in the whole country. Ithas two great universities as well as severallarge business colleges and colleges-ofmusic and art. This city pays a largertax per capita for schools than any othercity in the United States. It is situated
Text Appearing After Image:
Ocean front at Santa Monica, near Los Angeles.443 444 Los Angeles in the center of a land of almost perpetualsunshine, between the mountains and thesea. Los Angeles is both a winter and asummer resort. From 200,000 to 300,000tourists come here annually to spend theirvacations. One of the many reasons forthis is the fact that it is a sportsmansparadise. It boasts the most highly improvedsystem of highways in the United States, stretching in every direction from theheart of Los Angeles through the great trip for each day of the month, and everyone of them is over smoothly surfacedhighways lined with roses and orange, lemon, and walnut groves. Perhaps the most convincing tribute tothe highway system of this locality is theenormous number of automobiles in theone county of Los Angeles. Exactly 211,-6~9 automobiles were registered in thisone county on January 31, 1922, which ismore than the total registration for any oneof thirty-two different states of the Union.
