Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 3. A bent safety pin, swallowed by an insanepatient, was lying in the esophagus, with the pointpenetrating the posterior wall of the trachea. Aftera careful study of both views, the pin was removed inonly a few seconds, without an anesthetic. Fig. 4. A long bone in the esophagus. Foreignbodies in the upper part of the esophagus can best beshown by a lateral view, with the patient lying onthe back without a pillow, with the chin high up andshoulders pulled down, making the neck as long aspossible. The rays pass through the neck horizontally, while the plate is held at the side of the neck with sand-bags. Usually the first eight vertebrae can be shown.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 5. Open beauty pin in the right main bronchus(no lung changes), removed without difficulty throughthe bronchoscope. The fluoroscope was at hand, butnot used. Opaque objects in the bronchi can bedifferentiated from those in the esophagus by theirposition. They lie away from the middle line andusually at an angle, and point toward the trachea. Fig 6. Metallic tip of lead pencil, with short piece ofpencil completely plugging the left main bronchuswith pent-up secretion. When the pencil wasremoved, the secretions flooded the lungs and pre-vented the author from seeing through the broncho-scope. The fluoroscope located the pencil in theopposite bronchus, from which place it was removedbv means of a pair of forceps, passed through thebronchoscope, guided bv the x-ray. Artificialrespiration was used, with draining of the water-filled lung, and patient recovered. If both methods(x-ray and bronchoscope) had not been available, this patient would certainly have died. 7o8 Foreign Bodies in t
