ureter andother methods usually employed for elimin-ating or confirming diagnosis; so that in my Left Half of Abdomen Diagnosed by Pneumoperitoneum 67 presentation of this subject, I take it forgranted that all of these different methodsare being employed along with pneumoperi-toneum, as Case and others have shown thatdiverticula of the left half of the colon arenot infrequent and when carefully searchedfor are c(uite readily demonstrated by theusual opac(ue meal and similar methods ofexamining the gastro-intestinal tract. As arule the spastic or ulcerative colon can be into the peritoneal cavity, as well as newgrowths involving the kidney, or retroperi-toneal space. Different types of enlargedspleen can be demonstrated by pneumoperi-toneum, but must be differentiated by thecomplete blood count and different labora-tory methods. Cysts of the pancreas can bepositively proved by pneumoperitoneum bet-ter than by any other method. Adhesions tothe various organs can be actually visualized

New growths in the left half of thecolon are readily demonstrated by the opac(uemethod. Stone in the left kidney is demon-strated without the use of pneumoperito-neum ; but in some cases there is a Cjuestionas to whether the shadow is really a kidneystone or a calcareous mesenteric gland, andpneumoperitoneum will help us to difteren-tiate, especially when catheterization of theureter is impossible. Hydronephrosis canreadily be demonstrated by injection of gas Fig. 4. Case No. 12880.—Large Cystic Ovary,Accompanied by Multiple Fibroid Tumors of theL^terus.
