sure.The iliac colon can be reached by meetingthe magnesium sulphate solution by meansof the sigmoidoscope and a soft rubbertube, with the patient in the knee-chestposture. Recently we have been working withatonic conditions of the rectosigmoidapparatus and iliac colon. When magne-sium sulphate is taken into the stomach it effect of the antagonistic action may bemanifest at the same place and at thesame time. This is tonus. The degree ofcharacter of the tonus depends on thepreponderance of one or the other factor.Goldschmidt and Dayton13 have shownthat the colonic wall is impervious to thepassage of magnesium sulphate or sodiumsulphate; therefore, there can be no possibledanger in using these salts in the bowel.They have demonstrated that hypertonicsolutions of these salts increase in volumeand decrease in concentration approachingthe blood level. Solutions of concentrationnearly iso-osmotic with the blood showlittle change in volume. Hence there is free 4iS The Rectosigmoid Apparatus
