Another predisposing factor maybe a variation in the size of the blood- vessels as found in congestion fromvenous obstruction, or high arterialpressure in cardiorenals or advanced ar-teriosclerosis. 8. There may be a congenital predispo-sition. 9. Simple muscle weakness in the intes-tinal wall may have a causal relation to the presence of diverticula. One or all of the above factors may beinvolved in the production of diverticula.In general, herniae of any kind are the re-sult of increased frcssurc within a cavityplus a local weakness in the wall. In theregion where diverticula most commonlyoccur (the sigmoid) the intestine is sub-ject to increased pressure from accumulat-ing feces and gas. Weakness in the wall mav be producedbv localized fatty degeneration of themuscle; degeneration from cachexia; theforamen for the blood-vessels with thecoat of connective tissue are less resistantthan the surrounding muscle-fiber, etc.

The average age ofthe patient is from forty-five to sixty, and ingeneral there is a marked tendency to obes-ity. In our cases diagnosed by the .r-ray, themajority of the patients weighed about 200pounds. Men seemed more susceptible thanwomen. A history of chronic constipation is foundin about one-quarter of the cases. A pictureof chronic obstruction with alternating diar-rhea is suggestive, the chronic obstructionbeing from the secondary connective tissuechanges. Pain is present in a large percentage ofcases.
