If the animal be set aside after dustexposure the lung makes rapid and effectiveeffort to rid itself of the irritant. The clear-ing process has only been observed up tothree months in animals dusted for sevenmonths previously, but at that time practic-ally all the dust is collected within largeaggregations of round or oval mononuclearcells which lie in the immediate vicinity ofmuch enlarged lymph nodules. Heavy de-posits occur within such nodules and withinthe tracheo-bronchial lymph nodes. Fig. 4 (227). Exposure thirty-three years. Working every day. Granite fibroid pneumoconiosis stageC. Only symptoms slight cough, slight expectoration. Physical examination negative. 248 Roentgen Study of Dust Inhalation in the Granite Industry show an average size of 82 bv 84 microns(ocular micrometer measurement). Thesmaller particles average 4.3 by 6.3 micronswith a minimum of .028 by 1.4 microns byactual measurement. In shape the particlesmay vary greatly. Some are flattened poly-gonal masses with sharply cut edges and cor-ners. Others are rod-^ehaped, often slightlycurved, with sharply horizontal or square cutends. Frequent vegetable cells and fibers arenoted. Samples of dust resulting from the useof the pneumatic tool have been examinedby means of a small giant magnet made bythe Victor .Y-Ray Corporation, and consid-erable steel has been extracted from a givenquantity by means of the magnet, 2 drams ofgranite dust yielding 2 grains of steel. Fromthis experiment it will be seen th
