Text Appearing Before Image:
The presence of gas in the peritonealcavity after the injection of oxygen can bedemonstrated as late as eight days after theoriginal injection. 2. A very moderate amount of gas is suf- ficient for diagnostic purposes. A proportionof about 2 c.c. of gas to 100 grams of bodyweight appears to answer this requirement. 3. The withdrawal of the gas appears ad-visable unless a rapidly absorbable gas, suchas CO2, is used. 4. The use of a more readily absorbablegas than oxygen appears desirable. Note : Since this paper was read an efforthas been made to follow the suggestion ofAlvarez * and use carbon dioxide alone(Figs. 3 and 4) or a mixture of carbon di-oxide and oxygen (Fig. 5). The results havedemonstrated the very rapid absorption ofcarbon dioxide, and the retardation bymeans of mixing carbon dioxide and oxygenin suitable proportions. * Alvarez, Walter C. CO^ Instead of O for In-jecting the Peritoneal Cavity. Calif. State J. M.,Feb., 1920. 504 The Duration of Artificial Pneumo-Peritoneum
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 3. Pure Carbon Dioxide.Upper Figure: Taken in dorsal flccnl/itus with the plate against the side. Note the abdominal contents have receded from the anterior abdominal wall, indicating the ahsence of any adhesions.Lower Figure Taken Forty Minutes Later shows nearly all of the carbon dioxide has been absorbed. Thisoflfers a most striking contrast with the slow absorption noted in Figure 2 where oxygen was used.
