Figure 4 shows a series of four roentgeno-grams of a stomach made in the supineposition, at intervals of half a minute.A careful study will show that the foldsof the mucous membrane have changedform and width in this short time. Atten-tion should be directed to the changingforms and width of the groove betweenthe two folds marked with a. Figure 5 shows the change of the foldsof the mucous membrane within thepyloric canal (area a) on two roentgeno-grams made in the standing position at aninterval of about three-ciuarters of aminute. The width of the pyloric canal isabout the same and the circular contractionof the muscular coat is situated in aboutthe same area on the edge of the pyloriccanal. But the number, loini and position of the folds of the mucous membrane areapparently different in both roentgeno-grams. (P, pylorus.) In a state of greater expansion of themuscular coat no folds appear on the

A certain degree ofcontraction of the muscular coat withcorresponding diminution ot the cavityof the stomach seems, therefore, to benecessary for a formation of the folds onthe surface of the mucous membrane. Especially during the later periodof digestion, and, abo\e all, when in arecumbent position, the lower part of thestomach contracts to form a channel, arich relief of the mucous membraneappearing. Figure 6 shows a series of cross-cutpictures of the lumen of the stomach, drawn after anatomical preparations. Itcan be seen how the lumen of the stomachwith the same width of the muscular coat, can vary considerably through diflerentfoldings of the mucous membran
