25 in.,the time of exposure being governed bythe size of the patient. Deep compressionby means of an inflated rubber bag isalways used, and the tube remains overthe center of the diaphragm withouttilting. Two tihiis are used; on one, thecrest of the ihum is placed i in. abovethe center of the fdm (Fig. 4), thus givinga complete \iew of the bladder and ureters;on the other, the crest of the ilium is placedI in. below the center of the film thusshowinsj, both kidnevs and both ureters We wish here to express our appreciationof Dr. Potters perfection of the Buckydiaphragm, which has made possible thedevelopment of this technique. If a shadow is seen in the kidney area, which we believe to be a calculus, itshould be determined whether it lies in thekidney pelvis or in the cortical substanceof the kidney. This may necessitate themaking of a pyelogram. If the calculus isoutside of the kidney pelvis, it will beeasily seen; if within the kidney pelvis,it will probably be obscured by the opaque

Fig. 26. Ca in the left kidney and calciiluright kidnev. (Fig. 5). This same technique is used in allkidney examinations. We are trying a curved cassette whichbrings the kidney close to the film, andalso brings the portion of the film which isunder the kidney closer to the tube thanthat portion which is under the spine, thus giving the kidney relatively moreexposure than the spine. We are experi-menting also with a new type of film coat-ing which approaches a portrait emulsionand gives details of the soft shadowswhich are brought out still more bydeveloping the films in solutions whichcontain a relatively small proportion ofbromides. This information is importantto the surgeon, as he will be guided in hisoperative procedure by approaching thekidney at the most advantageous point forremoval of the calculus. A suspicious shadow in the ureteralarea of either side should be checked bycatheterization
