ave an undiagnosed density within thechest, syphilis should be thought of. To findthese densities, routine .r-ray examinationsare necessary. I have previously called attention to thefrequency with which heart lesions, es-pecially mitral stenosis, may simulate pul-monary tuberculosis, and wish to state thatno examination of the lung is complete X-Ray Examination of the Chest 441 without a heart examination and stereoscop-ic x-ray plates. Pneumonoconiosis is deservedly receivingmore and more attention all the time. Thereare two main forms of this—organic dust, and inorganic dust. The latter frequentlysuggests miliary tuberculosis and later inthe disease may produce massive fans of greatest value of the routme .r-ray examma-tion lies in its ability to yield definite datain the absence of definite physical signs. Dr. John Skavlem has been associatedwith me in a large part of this research, andI am especially indebted to him for arrang-ing the illustrations and covering the bib-liography.

Fig. 17. No. 918.—Melanotic sarcoma of lung. Proven by autopsy. great density, while organic dust produceslarge fans simulating pneumonia. Often thehistory and clinical condition of such pa-tients must be ascertained before making adiagnosis. Pulmonary infarct may closely simulatetuberculosis, especially the basal lesions, andmust always be considered. Finally, this review of over 10,000 chestexaminations shows the need for more gen-eral use of the A--ray in studying the lungs. In tuberculosis clinics this examinationshould be routine, and if it were more usedin our general hospitals it would not be longbefore many problems, such as syphilis of thelung, would be more fully understood.
