Clinton, On-tario, 29 Dec. 1S96. He was a son of Sarah J.Hale (q.v.). He was graduated from Harvardin 1837 and the ne.xt year was appointed philolo-gist to the government exploring expeditionunder Captain Wilkes, and was thus enabled tostudy the languages of the Pacific Islands, Northand South .America, .Australia, and Africa. Theresults of his observations were published inEthnography and Philology (1846). He thenstudied law, was admitted to the Chicago bar,and removing to Canada in 1855 practised lawat Clinton.
