s southwest of thecity of Moscow, comprises three divisions. Oneof these, the Fort, is enclosed by walls, now inruins. An ancient cathedral is the only buildingworth noting. Agriculture is an important in-dustry, and there are manufactures of wool, cot-ton, leather, paper, chemicals, etc. An activetrade with the interior is carried on, especiallyover the Oka River. Pop. (1897) 24,456. Serpula, a tube-making marine chsetopodworm (see Ch.etopod.\), which often lives andreproduces its tubes in such close proximityover considerable areas as to form, with thecemented fragments of coral, sea-shells, sand,etc., caught among its entwined tubes, largemasses of rocks. Such are to be seen on thecoast of Florida. Serra da Estrella, sarra da es-tralya.Portugal, in the province of Beira, is the highestrange of the country, attaining an altitude of6.540 feet. It belongs to the Guadarramas sys-tem, and is a continuation of the Gata rangein Spain, terminating in the Serra de Lousao. AMERICAN SERPENTS.
