The Upper Carboniferous rocks cover wideareas in Utah. Colorado, and Arizona; they alsooccur in the Black Hills in South Dakota, andin California, and British Columbia. They aregenerally limestones or sandstones, and containno coal beds. The distinction between Upperand Lower Carboniferous is not as sharp as inthe Mississippi valleJ^ The total thickness ofthe whole Carboniferous series in Nevada andUtah is about 13,000 feet. In western Europe the Lower Carboniferouslimestones reach from Ireland to central Ger-many, with a maximum thickness in England of6,000 feet. In southeastern Germany the Lower FOSSILS OV THF.
