Elizabeth Stephens ELIZABETH STEPHENS 139 an early age was sent to Castlegate School,York, then under the superintendence of Racheland Elizabeth Tregellis. Her schooldays werebroken into by an interval spent with her great-uncle, Nathaniel Morgan of Ross, whose ardentand advanced Liberalism and pronounced viewson the Abolition of Slavery, the Repeal of theCorn Laws, and especially the cause of Peace,made a lasting impression on the girls receptivemind. From this time she read and studiedHistory and Literature with the diligence andavidity which characterised her pursuit of know-ledge throughout her after life. In the year 1860, she married John Stephensof Ashfield, Falmouth, an enterprising busi-ness man, who afterwards filled the offices ofElder, and Clerk of Devon and Cornwall, Q.M. From this time, her life for many years,was fully occupied with the care of her largefamily of thirteen children, eleven of whomsurvive her.
