ter bv water mains or by hoseconnections, with fire engines. Both ofthese inventions depended on the burn-ing of n cord to release the water, butin 1812 Sir William Congreve projectedthe idea of using fusible cement andhere he laid the principle for the opera-tive functions of the automatic sprink-lers. There is no record, however, ofeither of these inventions coming intopractical use. Their failure must havediscouraged other engineers, for it wasnot until 1852 that attempts were againmade to invent apparatus for the auto-matic control of fire. From that time onmany attempts were made and patentsobtained in connection with the idea. For one reason or another the productsfailed in practice, but in 1881 Mr. Fred-erick Grinnell, by his patents, seemed toovercome all obstacles, and the sprink-ler he invented, with natural improve-ments and variations, or sprinklers of asomewhat similar type, are the ones thatare receiving the indorsement of fireand insurance officials throughout the world.
