Their failure must havediscouraged other engineers, for it wasnot until 1852 that attempts were againmade to invent apparatus for the auto-matic control of fire. From that time onmany attempts were made and patentsobtained in connection with the idea.For one reason or another the productsfailed in practice, but in 1881 Mr. Fred-erick Grinnell, by his patents, seemed toovercome all obstacles, and the sprink-ler he invented, with natural improve-ments and variations, or sprinklers of asomewhat similar type, are the ones thatare receiving the indorsement of fireand insurance officials throughout the world.
