salready been placed in the East andwork has begun on the task of convert-ing the plant into a shipyard. Dredg-ing and construction work has begunfor the three marine ways that are tobe installed. Contracts for steel shipsto the value of between $10,000,000and $11,000,000 are said to be alreadyassured. The force at the plant, which is nowone of the largest and best equippedsteel plate shops on the Pacific Coast,is to be increased. The company hasacquired eighty-nine acres of land onwhich the ways viill be constructed anda canal dredged north of the presentplant on the tidelands. .According to Mr. C. L. Moorman, vice-president, the plant will be ready forthe laying of the first keel within ninetydays. The first steel shipments are ex-pected here within the present month.The expansion is to be permanent andthe company will do a general ship-building business. Besides Mr. Moorman, the officers ofthe company are Mr. John H. Batcher,president, and Mr. F. R. Veach, secre-tarv and treasurer.
