t a little matter-of-fact, shook her head decidedly, and said that that was aU nonsense. There was still the question as to what Mr. Dillon would say aboutit, but our true love, which had had to wait so long, this time ransmoothly. Mr. Dillon, who still suffered from his wretched constitu-tion, was delighted at Lucias choice, and said all kinds of compli-mentary things about my rising fame and my other qualities And sowe were married, and the five girls from home were bridesmaids, though they soon afterwards married from our house under Lucias>care. And though I often tell Lucia that the last person she shouldhave married was a popular physician, considering she is never ill, yetshe always shakes her pretty golden head, and says gravely : But, perhaps, Arthur, some of the children ifiay inherit papaswretched constitution. As to the story of the ginger lozenge, Lucia^and I kept that asecret till Mr. Dillon died. He left Lucia all his money—and so endsthis true story of My First Fee.

KOBERr liAlwNKS K. AM) K, 1A\U>K. There was an exclamation of surprise, a start backwards. THE ARGOSY. OCTOBER^ 1882. RS. RAVENS TEMPTATION. BY THE AUTHOR OF DR. HARDYS MARRIAGE. CHAPTER XXXV. A TELEGRAM FROM THE COURT. THE shades of the October afternoon had gathered on the Templewhen Philip Connell quitted his chambers for Miss Agateshouse, arm-in-arm with Frank. The London twiHght seemed intoler-ably thick and sultry after the comparative freshness round thepaternal domain of the Connells, even in dirty Coltburn. The lamp was already lit in Miss Agates parlour, but the curtainswere not yet drawn, and as the cousins drew near the house, they gota full view of the quaint interior. Miss Agate sat at her writing table, her clasped hands lying on a huge volume open before her. She wastalking earnestly, yet with that calmness which is always the sign ofintensest feeling in women of her type, to her attendant, Mary Davies.Davies was not standing in her usual humble, deprecating attitude
