Charley was startled at thejump, but he had his hands full of the greatlong fur, and was in no danger of falling off. Listen, said the rabbit, after he hadtaken a few more jumps, *l think I hear adog. Now, you must take a good grip, andat the word go, hold on like grim death. Yelp, yelp! came the spaniel.

You had better climb on my back, saidthe rabbit. Charley knew it was a rabbit although itsbody was as big as an elephants, so heturned round, sprang as high as he could,got a grip of the great long fur, and climbedup to the back of the neck where he wasout of reach of his dreaded foes. The rabbit opened its great jaws, laidhold of half a dozen bamboos, and ate themlike grass, and then made one bound about Go it is, said the rabbit, and away hebounded over the tops of the bamboos,clearing a hundred yards at a stride. Charley found it very hard to keep hisplace ; at every leap he was jerked up offhis scat, but he had a good hold of the fur,,and the rabbit laid his ears back, whichmade a wall on either side of Charley andkept him from falling off. Its only a spaniel, said the rabbit, andI can outrun him any day. Charley s Wonderful Journey. Wont you stop a moment and let meget down? said Charley, I cant hold onmuch longer. * * * * Let me go, said the rabbit, and he gavea kick and jerked
