Thethree best known are A Christmas Carol, TheChimes, and The Cricket on the Hearth.Strange to say, they were mostly written whilethe author was traveling abroad: for example,the title of The Chimes was suggested, not bythe merry Christmas bells of some Englishchurch, but by the chiming of the bells of achurch in Genoa. In 1846 the now famous and popular authorwas in Italy, and engaged in the production ofDombey and Son. In this novel he attacks thevice of pride—pride of birth, pride of position,pride of wealth —and on the way gives us a trulypathetic picture of little Paul Dombey and hisearly death. The scene of the death of the littleboy so deeply affected the author himself that,after writing it, he wandered all night throughthe streets of Paris, feeling as though he himselfhad lost a well-loved child. One of the leading London dailies—the DailyNews—had Dickens for its first editor. But hesoon gave up this work, which was not congenial.
