His wit, fascinating conversa-tion, and sound common sense attracted the ad-miration of the gay and frivolous court, and hewas lionized by all. At a brilliant fete given in his honor, he wascrowned with laurel by one of three hundred dence abroad. Congress was pleased to declarethat the Honorable Benjamin Franklin, Esquire,was permitted to return to America. His fellow-signer of the Declaration and afterward our Pres-ident, Thomas Jefferson, had been chosen to suc-ceed him as minister to the French court.
