il it has taken perfect formin the commodious Welfare Hall, wherelunch is served not only to the sixhundred women employees, but alsoto the men of the factory. In May, 1905, an order was issuedby the company for the construction of Welfare Hall, which by the origi-inal plan was to have been 268 feet inlength, the work to be done entirelyby workmen then in the employ ofthe company, and to be completed infive weeks. After the building was well underway, it was decided to increase thelength to 368 feet, without, however,extending the time allowed for its con-struction. So systematically was thework done that in five weeks from theday on which theorder for constructionwas issued, the hall was ready for oc-cupancy, and the following menu wasserved to the employees: — Menu Vegetable Soup with Rice. A Cooking Class at National Cash Register The noon recess of one hour andtwenty minutes is a time of specialinterest to the visitor. Groups of youngwomen are gathered about the pianoor perhaps engaged in dancing; while inparts of the spacious dining-room orrest-rooms may be seen others chattingover their embroidery or enjoying astroll. One more diligent than the othersmay perhaps be found at the sewing-machine provided for their use; whilethe library, where files of newspapers,magazines, and books are always avail-able, attracts many. Cooking ClassesClasses in cooking, marketing, andhousehold economics are a feature ofthe welfare work during the winter,two hundred and ninety young womenbeing enrolled in two classes. A pro-ficient teacher of domestic science is en-gaged to demonstrate the best methodsof preparing nourishing and inexpen-sive meals.
