Masonic Temple, Boston; for the Masons take everyprecaution to preserve this relic of theold inn, where the first meetings of thesociety in New England were held.Here the first President of the UnitedStates stayed on a visit to Boston. Itwas afterwards removed to CongressStreet, and here was visited by GeneralStark after his victory at Bennington.Gen. Rufus Putnam and ManassehCutter, the moving spirits of the OhioCompany, also called their first meet-ing here. The old inn has been torndown a good many years now, and agreat granite building has been erectedon its site. At Dedham was the Ames Tavern,kept by the celebrated almanac maker,Nathaniel Ames, in 1735. A mostunique sign hung on this tavern,which is said to have portrayed somefamily difficulty. In settlement ofhis sons (Fisher Ames) estate, a suitwas brought into court. This so dis-gusted the innkeeper that, althoughthe suit was decided in his sons favor,he expressed his dislike by causing thewhole court to be painted on a sign-

P. ashe was familiarly known, from thefact that these initials were stampedon his rum barrels. The dining-roomof this old tavern was known as Inde-pendence Hall, having been so namedby the soldiers of the vicinity, to whomOld J.
