tic. After we had begun the unearthing.Jack became wildly enthusiastic, while Grace plainly sulked. And really,it was rather a sorry sight. Thefurniture was dingy and dilapidated, and the old Staffordshire ware coveredwith the dust of decades. And thebaskets, which had held the mendingand the food of by-gone generations, were disreputable looking affairs. The bed was covered withan old, hand-woven coverlid, as wasthe couch in the living-room. Theone on the bed is the unusualgrape-vine pattern, with the mostinteresting border I have ever seen.It has in it the motto, E PluribusUnum, the flag, the eagle holdingthe arrows, and the state house. The other is the sunburst patternwith a beautiful rose and bird border. The result of our work was satis-factory to John and me, and eminentlyso to Jack. Before the final toucheswere put on I sent the children to anaunt for a months visit. I wantedthem to see the finished product, but not the making of it. When Jack caught his first view, his hat went up in the air and hecaught me and swung me in a dizzywhirl. Its great! Its glorious! he shouted. Grace — Varnie by this time —did not seem especially depressed, but of course, logically, she coulcnot approve.
