OUR Holy Church was fiist represented on thisisland by priests from France. In later timesa consideraljle body of French Catholics from Acadiawere landed here; then, when under happier auspicesCatholicity was free, the venerable Father Farmer camefrom Pennsylvania to break the Bread of Life to theFrench and Canadian Catholics. Later still, when St.Peters congregation was formed, the good but eccentricpriest, the Rev. Mr. Lavaliniere, in 1785, received fromDr. Carroll faculties to minister to the French in andaround New York City. Though he subsequently hadcharge also of the English-speaking Catholics, he is thepioneer of the separate work among the French. This did not lead, however, to the organizing of achurch and congregation, and for many years the Frenchin New York City depended on the occasional presenceof a priest of tlieir nationality—the Abbe Sibour
