Text Appearing Before Image:
View through car doors, Union Freight Station Fifteenth Street Union Freight Station Union Freight Station No. 2 of the Chicago Junc-tion Railway is located at 15th Street and WesternAvenue. At this point the Chicago Junction Railway haserected a four-story and basement warehouse andfreight station, the first floor being used for less carloadfreight purposes in the same manner as at the 43rdStreet Station. The rest of the building is occupiedby the Midland Warehouse and Transfer Company forits general warehouse and storage business. This stationhas a capacity of seventy-five cars at one setting andunloading space for fifty teams. Freight is received byteam from all parts of the city and from many milesdistant. It is an interesting fact that over eleven percent ofthe total outgoing L. C. L. tonnage from the City ofChicago is handled through the Union Freight Stationsof the Chicago Junction Railway. 18
Text Appearing After Image:
View from Yard, looking toward Union Freight Station, showing one hundred and twenty-five cars on track, set for loading, with Midland Warehouses and National Wool Warehouse in background There are now approximately thirty-five through package cars in operationdaily from these stations to destination and gateway points, the contents of whichare not handled at the transfer houses of the trunk lines in this city. Twenty-fivepercent of the L. C. L. tonnage from these stations is handled in these throughpackage cars. The handling of less-car-load freight at the various Junction freight stations, receives constant study as to methods and equipment. No expense is spared toprovide the best possible facilities for theexpeditious movement of package freight. As a result of this continual investigationby its efficiency engineers and experts, came the suggestion of an electric motortractor to haul trucks loaded wdth freightinstead of loading the tractor itself as hadbeen the custom.
