Buildings in the Central Manufacturing District are erected by contractafter competitive biddings, and care is used to award contracts only to responsiblecontractors. Railway tracks for each building are put in before constructionstarts, thereby enabling contractors to handle their material from cars economically.The District also contracts annually for large quantities of construction material,prices of which are often lower than contractors can obtain. In such case, thecost of buildings is reduced proportionately. As a result of close competition amongbidders, possible economies, and the careful inspection of all buildings undercontract, it is safe to say that the Central Manufacturing District is constructingbuildings more economically than is possible anywhere else in Chicago, and, at thesame time, securing a most substantial, attractive, and practical class of buildings. 15

Over the tracks of the Chicago Junction Railway, mustpass every pound of freight moving in or out of the Stockyards, Packingtown,or the Central Manufacturing District. With this enormous tonnage, the Junctionis enabled to give service which would not be possible under other conditions. The Junction tracks and equipment are maintained in the highest state ofefficiency. The Junction has over sixty modern switching engines, engagedexclusively in the switching of freight and it is no unusual thing for 200 enginesof connecting lines to be on the Junction tracks in a single day.
