As we bid good-bye to the Canadian Rockies, wemay say that perhaps the world offers nowhere elsesuch a sea of mountains, such knots and clusters andcordons of elevations, as in this strange and sublimeregion where the Columbia and its tributaries, theKootenai, the Illecillewaet, the Wapta, the Beaver,the Canoe, seem to be playing hide-and-seek with theThompson and the Fraser. Al-though not half as long as the Mississippi, the Colum-bia equals it in volume. Well joined, in truth, are the sublime River andthe sublime mountains.
